Cancer Awareness

In a country like India where illiteracy is high and so many villages remain unconnected by road even, spreading awareness of health and hygiene is a huge challenge. Even among the literate, there are many who fear approaching a doctor in the face of symptoms. Unfortunately, symptoms do not go away by itself most of the time.

In a disease like cancer especially, early detection and early treatment is the key to saving lives. Cancer awareness can be classified into two major heads.

Prevention and Detection

Prevention

Through the ages, one dictum has remained constant: prevention is better than cure. The right environment, the right lifestyle, and the proper diet can go a long way in ensuring that you remain cancer free. Our job is to educate people on how they can maintain healthy habits that will help them avoid cancer.

  • Clean and hygienic environment
  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • No smoking, drinking, or tobacco

Regular camps are conducted to create awareness among the people. We interact with them to stress the importance of keeping hygiene and keeping healthy. Oral cancers are among the most common cancers in India. Tobacco cessation camps are conducted to teach them the evils of tobacco and how it could cause oral cancer. Our doctors frequently meet the people live on radio and social media interviews to gain a larger reach.

Detection

Today, if detected early, most cancers are curable. Unfortunately, irrespective of educational and financial status, a large number of patients come in search of help when it is already too late. The need of the hour is to create awareness among all strata of society about the need for addressing symptoms immediately. They must approach the right doctor and get themselves treated. Every day saved goes a long way in saving lives.

Cancer, when caught early, is curable.

It has been our mission to take this message to the people at every possible opportunity. To that end we

  • We conduct awareness camps regularly
  • We educate on what symptoms should be looked out for,
  • We teach self-examination techniques,
  • We make known the availability of regular cancer screening tests.

We instill in them the need to see a doctor immediately if they suspect they have cancer symptoms. Many symptoms are common like headache, fatigue, weight changes, bowel problems, cough, breathlessness etc. However, if these symptoms persist, it is imperative to see the doctor without delay. The doctor will guide them as to what further diagnostic tests have to be done.

Once the required tests have been done, doctors arrive at a diagnosis of the disease and guide the patients through the necessary modalities of treatment.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women today, affecting one lakh women every year in India alone. The good news is that the survival rate is very good if detected early. To facilitate early detection, women over 40 years of age are advised to get a mammogram done every year.

At VS Hospitals, ten free mammograms are done every day and we have been doing so for the past twenty years.
